Dresden. Often called "Florence on the Elbe".
Market square with the Frauenkirche off to the left. Frauenkirche has one of the largest church domes in all of Europe. Originally built in 1743. Completely destroyed in 1945. Reconstruction completed in 2005. The inside looked like a combination church and opera house with highly decorated balconies all around the interior.
Bruhl's Terrace. A panoramic terrace looking over the Elbe River. Nicknamed "The Balcony of Europe".
Bruhlsche Galerie. Art museum.
Dresden Cathedral (Cathedral of the Holy Trinity) - Italian Baroque style. originally built between 1726 - 1743. Badly damaged in WWII but was restored by 1962.
Many other beautiful buildings in the Old Town area.
View from the Augustus Bridge looking back toward Bruhl's Terrace. You can also see how low the water lever is in the river with all that exposed shoreline.

Really pretty city! Everything looks like it was made decades or centuries ago!
ReplyDeleteThey did a good job of reconstructing the city after it was heavily bombed during WWII. Some of the buildings are original but most of them were put back together in the 1950's and 1960's.

ReplyDeleteSo far there have been some pretty interesting places to see. I'll have to do more reading about some of these places when I get home. Just like we did after getting home from Vietnam. Glad you're enjoying the blog.
