Day 6 Wittenberg

 57 miles to Wittenberg

Tough day of riding.  I got up early and packed up my extremely wet tent and got on the road by 8am.  Soon after that the wind and rain started.  It took me 2 hours to go 10 miles.  Ugh!  Eventually I made it to Wittenberg and decided to get a hotel room - because all my stuff was wet and I hadn't washed any clothes in 2 days.

Wittenberg has a lovely, charming old town.  And it is without a doubt the quietest old town I've been in.  You can look at the pictures and see just how few people are here.

Famous for Martin Luther and the start of the Protestant Reformation.

Lutherhaus - a monastery and where Martin Luther lived for 35 years.  He moved in here as a monk in 1508.

All Saint's Church -   Where Luther nailed his 95 theses (or Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences)  on the door on October 31, 1517, on All Saints Day.
This is the doorway where Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses.  The original wooden door burned in a fire in 1760.  This bronze door was installed in 1858 and bears the theses in Latin.

Stadkirche Wittenberg - " Mother Church of the Reformation".  This is where Martin Luther preached.  Here was the first celebration of the mass in German rather than Latin and the first ever distribution of the bread and wine to the congregation, on Christmas day 1521.  The oldest part of the church dates to 1281.

Market Square - Marktplatz.  The Stadkirche is off to the right and the old Town Hall is on the left.
